Is Koh Rong Touristy?

“Is Koh Rong too touristy?” is a concern among travellers seeking authentic experiences. There’s no doubt that over the years Koh Rong has become more and more popular. Thankfully, for now you can still only get to the island by boat. However, there are plans for a $300m investment in an international airport on the island – so it’s undoubtedly about to become much busier.

Here’s a closer look at how tourism currently shapes Koh Rong, allowing you to decide if it matches your vacation expectations.

Pros and Cons of Tourism on Koh Rong

Sometimes tourism can be a good thing. Here are the pros of tourism on Koh Rong 👇

Developed Infrastructure: Koh Rong caters to a wide range of preferences with various accommodations, eateries, and activities. This development ensures comfort and convenience for visitors.
Accessibility: Frequent ferry services make reaching Koh Rong straightforward, enhancing its appeal as a travel destination.
Lively Atmosphere: The island’s vibrant nightlife and social scene attract those looking for fun and interaction.
Natural Attractions: Despite its popularity, Koh Rong remains a haven of stunning beaches and lush jungles, perfect for relaxation and adventure.

… and the cons 👇

Crowded Spots: Certain areas, especially around Koh Tui village and Koh Rong Beach, can feel overcrowded during peak seasons, potentially diminishing the sense of serenity.
Commercialization: The influx of tourists has led to commercialisation in some parts, possibly affecting the island’s authentic charm. The island has been bought by a Hong Kong investment company, so expect to see more luxury resorts pop up soon.
Higher Costs: Tourism can drive up prices, making Koh Rong slightly more expensive than less visited Cambodian destinations.

Whether Koh Rong feels too touristy depends on personal preferences. If you value tranquility and authenticity above all, exploring quieter areas or traveling off-season could enhance your experience. Alternatively, the island’s convenience, variety, and natural beauty make it a worthwhile destination for those who enjoy a mix of relaxation and socialising.

How To Avoid Tourist Spots

Research quieter spots on Koh Rong like Sok San Beach or 4K Beach to avoid crowds.
Consider visiting during the rainy season (May to October) for a more peaceful experience.
Exploring beyond popular spots can reveal hidden gems that offer a break from the touristy feel.
This balanced perspective aims to help you make an informed decision about visiting Koh Rong, factoring in the impact of tourism on your travel experience.

Is Koh Rong A Party Island?

Is Koh Rong a party island? Absolutely, Koh Rong earns its title as Cambodia’s party hotspot. Koh Tui Village buzzes with life at night, hosting a vibrant mix of bars and restaurants that attract partygoers with music, drinks, and a lively vibe.

Key Party Hotspots

Police Beach Party Zone: Here, the beach transforms into a radiant party venue under the moonlight, mirroring the energy of famed full moon parties. Featuring fire shows, DJs, and ocean-backed dance floors, these bi-weekly events are a must-experience. If you’re a fan of techno-house and electro music, then this is the place for you. The party zone primarily features these genres, creating a high-energy dance experience.

The Police Beach Party Zone adopts an eco-conscious approach. They enforce a “no single-use plastic” policy, encouraging guests to bring their own cups or to buy reusable ones at the entrance. Additionally, they decorate with organic materials and power their events with a 15KW Electro Voice sound system for an immersive experience.

Nest Beach Club: Famous for day-long parties like Nestival, Nest Beach Club merges games, music, and dancing in the sunshine, offering a perfect mix of fun and scenic beach partying. DJ sets and live music set the party mood with electronic and reggae beats. Enjoy beach volleyball, frisbee, and chilling on sun loungers or in hammocks. Evening brings fire shows and a festive vibe and a nice mix of travellers and locals.

Dragon Den: Very popular with backpackers, Dragon Den pulses with Koh Rong’s party spirit where stories and friendships flow as freely as the drinks. It’s more of a chill vibe, and not as intense as the above. There’s live music from various genres and the inclusion of pub crawls.

I believe Koh Rong is perfect for both party lovers and nature fans alike. As someone who enjoys both (I’d class myself as a partying nature gal), I loved the island for its ability to appeal to both sides of my personality. Koh Rong is worth visiting if you want an island that can do both!

Is Koh Rong worth visiting if you’re not looking for parties? Even if parties aren’t your thing, Koh Rong still stands out. Its peaceful days contrast with the vibrant nights, making it a very unique destination.

How Do You Get Around Koh Rong?

On a long boat going around Koh Rong

Exploring Koh Rong Island is accessible through various transportation methods, catering to different preferences and needs.

Walking: Walking across the island is the most budget-friendly option, ideal for short distances and immersing yourself in the scenery of Koh Rong. It allows you to enjoy the scenery at your own pace but might not be suitable for longer distances or remote areas.

Motorbike: For those seeking more freedom and adventure, renting a motorbike is a great choice. It offers the flexibility to explore the island’s hidden beaches and viewpoints at your leisure. However, it’s important to be cautious due to varying road conditions and to ensure you’re comfortable riding.

Tuk-tuk: Tuk-tuks provide a comfortable means of transport for short journeys, especially convenient when carrying luggage or in groups. Though more costly than walking, negotiating the fare in advance can make it a practical choice for quick trips.

Longtail boat: Traveling between beaches and villages is uniquely enjoyable by longtail boat, offering scenic views and access to less accessible spots. This option, while more expensive, adds an adventurous twist to your island exploration but be mindful of sea conditions.

When navigating Koh Rong, consider downloading an offline map for easier orientation, especially if opting for motorbike rental. Protective clothing and sunscreen are advisable for outdoor activities. Checking road conditions after rain and negotiating fares for tuk-tuks and boats in advance can enhance your travel experience, allowing you to enjoy Koh Rong’s beauty safely and conveniently.
