Welcome to your comprehensive guide to visiting the To Sua Ocean Trench, one of Samoa’s most stunning natural wonders. Located on the southeastern coast of Upolu Island, this unique swimming hole draws in visitors with its unique beauty. If you’re a first-time visitor to Samoa or someone who has been a thousand times, the To Sua Ocean Trench promises an unforgettable experience.

I absolutely fell in love with Samoa during my visit; it’s a destination like no other. For travellers seeking an escape from the usual tourist trails, Samoa is a breath of fresh air. Its rich culture, stunning natural landscapes, and the warmth of its people offer an experience that’s both authentic and enriching. The islands are so diverse, ranging from colourful coral reefs to the lush rainforests, Samoa is an absolute trove for those looking to explore a unique and unspoiled corner of the world (Samoa Tourism – sponsor me!). When I lived in Sydney, I was lucky to work with lots of Samoan people who gave me long lists of what to experience when visiting Samoa – and they all had To Sua at the top of their lists.

What is the To Sua Ocean Trench?

Known as “To Sua,” meaning “Big Hole” in Samoan, this 30-meter-deep natural swimming hole captivates with its crystal-clear and stunning blue waters. Formed by a collapsed lava tube, To Sua is connected to the ocean through a narrow opening, making it a haven for swimming, snorkelling, and diving enthusiasts.

This unique site is more than just a natural attraction; it holds a special place in Samoan culture. Revered as the “God of the Sea” or “Water of the Rock,” To Sua is considered sacred, believed to be the dwelling of the ocean god Tangaloa. The surrounding village of Lotofaga is known for its stunning beaches, rainforests, and the warm hospitality of its people, offering a perfect backdrop for those wanting a good mix of relaxation and exploration.

Renting a Car

For those who value flexibility and independence, renting a car is the ideal option. The journey from Apia, Samoa’s capital, to the To Sua Ocean Trench takes approximately two hours via the picturesque South Coast Road. This route leads directly to Lotofaga Village, the gateway to the trench. Car rentals in Samoa offer a range of vehicles to suit different preferences and budgets. The drive itself is an experience, featuring scenic views and the opportunity to explore at your own pace. If you’re booking in advance Discover Cars has some of the best rental car deals, but you can also book directly at rental shops in Apia (which is what we did as we’re never totally organised!).

Taking a Taxi

If you prefer not to drive, taxis are a convenient alternative. Available throughout Apia, taxis offer a hassle-free way to reach the trench. The fare ranges from 100-150 Samoan tala (approximately $40-$60 USD), and the travel time is around two hours. Taxis in Samoa are known for their reliability and comfort, providing a relaxed journey to your destination. The taxi drivers will also act as your own personal tour guide if you let them, which is great for seeing things only the locals will know. We took a few taxis around the island and he took us to hidden waterfalls in the rainforest and bought us some traditional Samoan food to try and explained how it was made. In my opinion speaking to locals is the best way to experience a place, and the Samoan people are so friendly and welcoming you might find yourself being invited around for dinner.

For a comprehensive experience, consider joining a guided tour. Numerous tour operators in Apia organize trips to the To Sua Ocean Trench, often including other nearby attractions.
