  • The best area to stay in Penang

  • A sample itinerary.

Is Penang worth going to?

Definitely! Penang was one of the highlights when backpacking South East Asia, and a perfect addition to any backpacking trip in the region. Its unique fusion of cultures, affordability, rich history, and renowned street food make it a favourite among backpackers. Given its strategic location, it acts as a cultural bridge between different Asian traditions, making it a fascinating stop. Moreover, Georgetown’s hostels and budget accommodations, combined with its UNESCO World Heritage status, are particularly attractive for backpackers seeking both comfort and enriching experiences. In the grand tapestry of South East Asia’s destinations, Penang stands out as a must-visit spot.

Where to stay in Penang

First thing you’re probably wondering is “which area of Penang is best to stay?”. My personal opinion is Georgetown. This isn’t just a place in Penang; it’s where the magic happens. Georgetown is where travellers love to stay because it’s the beating cultural heart of Penang. Here’s why Georgetown stands out as the prime choice for travellers and why it’s the best part of Penang to stay in:

  1. Historical & cultural hub: As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Georgetown is a living canvas of Penang’s rich history and multicultural tapestry. From vibrant street art to Chinese temples and Indian bazaars, every corner paints a picture of the city’s diverse heritage.

  2. Gastronomic delight: Dubbed the culinary capital of Malaysia, Georgetown offers a tantalising array of local delicacies in its bustling hawker stalls and eateries, promising a feast for every palate.

  3. Budget-friendly & central: With a range of accommodations to fit all budgets and its prime location, Georgetown stands as the ideal base for both backpackers and luxury travellers looking to explore the best of Penang.

For the cost-conscious traveler, Love Lane should be your top pick. It’s a hub for affordable lodgings in Georgetown, surrounded by bustling bars and convenience like the 7/11 store. Personally, I vouch for the Red Inn Court. For as little as £7 per night, you can get a cozy private double room with a shared bathroom. The cherry on top? Free breakfast and endless tea or coffee.

At Red Inn Court you can get a dorm for around £7 and privates starting at £15. Check TripAdvisor to compare the most recent deals.

However, since much of Georgetown is celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, there’s a nominal government tax of about 2 MYR (40p) per night. This is a small price to pay for preserving such a heritage-rich locale.

24 Hours in Penang: Is 1-day enough in Penang?

Picture of Georgetown, Penang

While 1 day gives you a glimpse of Penang’s charm, especially in hotspots like Georgetown, truly soaking in the island’s rich culture, history, and cuisine would ideally take more than a day. If you’re limited to 24 hours in Penang, you can prioritize key attractions and experiences. However, if you have the luxury of time, consider extending your stay to delve deeper into Penang’s multifaceted beauty.

What is special about Penang Street Art?

24 hours in Penang is simply incomplete without tracing the pathways of Georgetown’s iconic street art. These aren’t just paintings; they’re stories. Crafted masterfully with a mix of realism and physical elements, these pieces of art form the city’s lifeblood. Commissioned in 2009, these artworks were meant to infuse life into Georgetown’s streets, and they definitely succeeded.

Rent a bicycle from a shop near Love Lane and pedal your way into the old town heart. It might take you a couple of hours to stumble upon all the murals, but that’s half the adventure! Must-sees include the “Brother and Sister on Swing”, “Cat and Mouse”, and “Little Children on Bicycle”. And when you need a breather? Head over to Armenian street. The Edelweiss Café, despite its non-Malaysian name, offers a prime spot for people-watching while savouring an exquisite coffee. And if you’re here on a Saturday, the evening market is a festivity you shouldn’t miss.

9:30 PM – Late Night Stroll and Street Food

Georgetown never really sleeps. Step out for a late-night walk, grabbing some street food along the way. Penang’s nighttime vibe is different, quieter but equally as fun.
