The Best Hostels in Waikiki: Top Picks for the Budget-Conscious Traveller
Waikiki, a shimmering gem of Honolulu, is renowned for its golden sands, stunning blue waters, and of course the Aloha spirit. But beyond its natural allure lies an array of accommodation options. This includes some of the most vibrant hostels that let you experience Hawaii on a budget.
If you’re planning a tropical getaway and want to merge comfort with culture, my list of the best hostels in Waikiki is the perfect starting point. Oahu, where you’ll find Waikiki and Honolulu, is probably the most expensive island in the state of Hawaii. However, it’s not impossible to experience these islands on a budget. I went backpacking in Hawaii and LOVED it – even if I was having to keep an eye on the pennies. From beachfront spots to the heart of the community, here’s your guide to the best hostels in Waikiki.
Is it worth it to stay in Waikiki?
100%. Waikiki, a beachfront neighbourhood of Honolulu, encapsulates the idyllic beauty of Hawaii perfectly. Its sandy shores and crystal-clear waters attract millions of tourists every year, who usually stay at the resorts. Besides the beach, there are shopping streets, world-class restaurants, and the most sought-after for backpackers – the best hostels in Waikiki. Staying in a Waikiki hostel isn’t just about budget travel; it’s about experiencing the local Aloha spirit in its most genuine form.
What is the best area of Waikiki?
Waikiki sits in the world-renowned neighbourhood of Honolulu, and offers a blend of experiences depending on where you choose to stay. Central Waikiki, especially around the ever-vibrant Kalakaua Avenue, is the heartbeat of the region. Here, the fusion of cultures is evident in every corner. It’s the ultimate spot if you’re looking to immerse yourself in a lively atmosphere. From beach activities during the day to the rhythmic beats of nightlife (recommend trying out all of the beers at the Yard bar), this central location offers it all. The close proximity to the beach, top shopping destinations, and a plethora of eateries makes it a top pick for many. If you’re looking for the best hostels in Waikiki, central Waikiki won’t disappoint.
However, for those who yearn for a calmer side of Waikiki, setting your sights towards the Diamond Head side can be a game-changer. This area, though still accessible to all of Waikiki’s prime offerings, provides a calmer vibe. The views of the majestic Diamond Head crater, coupled with less crowded beaches, give travellers a chance to relish in a more relaxed Hawaiian experience. If tranquility is on your checklist, along with proximity to some of the best hostels in Waikiki, the Diamond Head side is a splendid choice.
Top 5 Best Hostels in Waikiki
All of these hostels are available on Hostelworld – which remains my favourite place for booking hostels since I first went backpacking (in 2013!). HostelWorld has the best range of hostels in the world. Occasionally, you can find other deals via TripAdvisor (bonus that you get to read all of the reviews too). I’d recommend checking TripAdvisor first to compare deals (but Hostelworld usually have the best ones).
The Beach Waikiki by ALOH
Situated just a few minutes from the world-renowned Waikiki Beach, The Beach Waikiki by ALOH serves as an oasis for travellers who seek both comfort and value. This haven not only promises a serene night’s rest but also kickstarts your day with aromatic Hawaiian coffee, a complimentary delight from the hostel. If the beach wasn’t enough of a selling point, their rooftop common area, often mentioned as a highlight by visitors, offers both relaxation and a chance to mingle.
Pros:
- Exceptional Staff: Many guests have praised the staff’s warm demeanor and helpful nature, going above and beyond to enhance their Waikiki experience.
- Rooftop Terrace: A consistent favorite among visitors, this space offers both relaxation and an opportunity to bond with fellow travelers.
- Cleanliness: Guests are quick to highlight the spotlessness of the rooms and shared amenities, particularly noting the consistently clean shared bathrooms.
- Organized Tours: For those eager to explore beyond the bounds of Waikiki, the hostel offers discounted day tours, allowing guests to discover the lesser-known gems of O’ahu.
- Ideal Location: Nestled in the heart of Waikiki, guests appreciate the hostel’s proximity to the beach and other central attractions.
Cons: Despite the myriad of positives, some areas can be enhanced. Guests have mentioned a rather noisy air conditioning system, which could be a disturbance for light sleepers. Additionally, the strength of the wifi in the rooms sometimes doesn’t meet guests’ expectations, signaling room for improvement in connectivity.
Polynesian Hostel Beach Club
My favourite and best hostel in Waikiki. When I stayed here everything was catered for, including a great pancake breakfast which helped us stay on budget. Located in the bustling heart of Waikiki, the Polynesian Hostel Beach Club offers an eclectic mix of modern amenities and classic Hawaiian vibes. Whether you’re a solo traveller or with a group, the hostel provides a welcoming atmosphere for social interaction. The premise of the hostel isn’t just about providing a place to rest your head but an immersive experience – from the little shelves attached to each bed to the loaner beach gear available for sun-soaked days at the beach.
Pros:
- Adaptable staff: Lots of travellers have highlighted the commendable responsiveness of the staff, especially during unexpected events like cancelled flights or misplaced items. The front desk staff helped us book onto tours (some run by the hostel) and gave us tips on where to go and which buses to get.
- Versatile sleeping arrangements: Whether you’re opting for a semi-private room or a dorm, guests praise the spatial arrangements and the tranquility they offer despite being close to communal areas.
- Tech-savvy: The convenience of unlocking room doors with smartphones or manual PINs is a huge plus for many, ensuring safety without compromising ease.
- Communal features: With a well-equipped kitchen, abundant fridge space, and a cozy common area complete with hammocks, guests have ample opportunities to socialise or relax.
- Convenient location: Its prime position in Waikiki means easy access to major attractions, adding to the appeal of the Polynesian Hostel Beach Club.
Cons: While I had a great stay here, there is always room for improvements. The absence of individual plugs for every bunk bed and the potential for street noise, especially for rooms overlooking Lemon Rd, can be minor inconveniences. Light sleepers might prefer to shut the windows and opt for the air conditioner.
Seaside Hawaiian Hostel
Seaside Hawaiian Hostel, located in the heart of Waikiki, prides itself on being a hub for travellers looking for a relaxing and sociable environment. This hostel seamlessly merges the charm of traditional Hawaiian architecture with the conveniences of modern living. A sunlit room, an expansive courtyard, and a fully equipped kitchen give guests a slice of home, complemented by the distinctive Hawaiian vibe. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or experiencing the hostel life for the first time, Seaside Hawaiian offers a memorable experience.
Pros:
- Socially Engaging: With its spacious courtyard and covered areas, the hostel provides ample opportunities for guests to mingle, fostering a sense of community. Special events like outdoor movie nights further enhance the social experience.
- Professional Staff: Many guests praise the courteous and efficient staff, highlighting their eagerness to provide a comfortable stay.
- Natural Ambiance: Rather than relying solely on air conditioners, the hostel’s airy rooms, equipped with windows on multiple sides and silent ceiling fans, ensure a comfortable temperature.
- Amenities: From free surfboard hire to organized surfing lessons, the Seaside Hawaiian Hostel doesn’t just offer a place to stay, but a holistic Hawaiian experience. Additionally, the prime location in Waikiki makes exploring the area convenient.
- Comprehensive Facilities: A full kitchen open to guests, fresh linens and towels in the rooms, and special staff-organized activities make for an inclusive stay.
Cons: Some travellers have pointed out areas where the hostel could improve. The Wi-Fi connection isn’t consistent in all rooms, forcing guests to work in the common area occasionally. Though a free breakfast is advertised, it often comprises just toast and coffee, with additional items being charged. Lastly, while many guests find the staff friendly and helpful, others felt they were occasionally inattentive, leading to concerns about professionalism.

How long should I stay in Waikiki?
An ideal stay in Waikiki ranges from 5 to 7 days. This amount of time allows you to not only relax on its iconic beaches but also explore nearby attractions, taste local delicacies, and interact with fellow travellers at your chosen hostel. Personally, I spent 10 days staying at Polynesian Hostel Beach Club which allowed me to explore most of Oahu and see everything I wanted to around the island like Kualoa Ranch, North Shore, Pearl Harbour and Manoa Falls. Most of the best hostels in Waikiki will run small tours out to these places in Jeeps. However, if you want a full day tour usually run by a local, I’d recommend booking with Get Your Guide. Get Your Guide has a range of small group tours that help the local economy and aren’t too expensive.

Dorms range from $35-$45 per night depending on the season. Included in the price is a free pancake breakfast each morning and free surfboard hire. A top tip would be the make the most of the free pancake breakfast before your day of activities. I’ve written a full rundown of staying at the Polynesian Beach Club Hostel, and the other best hostels in Waikiki here. […]
